Ethiopia, partners sign $7.5 mln worth
programme

ADDIS ABEBA(August 2 - 3,2008) - The Government of Ethiopia, Spanish Development International Cooperation Agency, United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office, United Nations Population fund (UNFPA) and World Food Programme (WFP) on Thursday signed a joint programme under the UNDP- Spain Millennium Development goal (MDG) Achievement fund.

The programme will have duration of 3 years and an estimated budget of 7.5 million USD has been made available by the UNDP- Spain Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Achievement's Fund entitled "Leave No Women Behind" for its execution.

Hirut Dilebo, Minster of Women Affairs on her remarks at Sheraton Hotel said that the problem of women and children in Ethiopia is very complex adding that the government has been striving to curb with partners.

The joint programme is an integrated programmer addressing gender equality and women empowerment objectives.

The interventions of the joint programme are clearly aligned with the MDGs, United Nations Development Framework (UNDAF) and fall within the priorities of the Gender Thematic Group, according to officials at the signing ceremony at the Sheraton.

The programme was being implemented in ten woredas of Amhara and Tigray Regional States. Institutional capacity building, community mobilization, life skills, literacy, reproductive health and livelihood targeting community mobilization targeting a total of 254,000 people are included in Programme.

According to Monique Rakotomalala, Ambassador's Farewell and Representative of UNFPA Ethiopia, Amhara and Tigray regions were chosen from the rest of regions for the reason that the intensity rate of early marriage in both regions was higher than others.

Activities will include providing mentoring and basic education for girls and women; training health extension workers and health staff on reproductive health, HIV and gender; providing information about nutrition and sustainable homestead activities; a credit scheme; and married girls club to provide information about reproductive health, legal rights and livelihood skills, a statement issued on the day said.

Leave no women behind is an experimental project being implemented in rural areas of Amhara region. The project uses mobilization of women into groups and adult literacy as an entry point for reproductive health educating and referrals.

H.E Mekonnen Manyazewal, State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, H.E.Ms. Carmen DeLa Pena Corcuera, Ambassador of Spain and different UN Representatives attended the ceremony.
