India
seeks Ethiopian support
at IAEA meet |

ABEBA(August 2 - 3,2008) -
Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of India and Minister of State
for External Affairs Anand Sharma visited Ethiopia this week to ask
for support at the Board of Governors meeting of the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held Friday.
The Special Envoy called on Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Seyoum
Mesfin, Minister of Foreign Affairs explaining his country's keenness
to enhance its civil nuclear energy programme in cooperation with
other countries, as to contribute to the enhancement of India's economic
development and meeting its energy demands, the Indian Embassy here
said in a statement.
Accordingly, the envoy presented a letter from the Prime Minister
of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia seeking
support from Ethiopia.
In his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia the
Special Envoy explained in detail the approach to civil nuclear cooperation,
its necessity, impact and why India had chosen the IAEA special safeguards
route, the embassy added.
In both meetings, discussions also took place on the continuing cooperation
between India and Ethiopia in the development of infrastructure, industry,
agriculture and services in Ethiopia.
It was noted that India was now among the leading investors in Ethiopia
and these investors were very welcome for their positive contribution
to the development of Ethiopia in a democratic framework.
According to the statement, India's cooperation in the field of human
resource development was also positively regarded and further plans
for the expansion of cooperation in this sector were discussed, particularly,
in the context of the implementation of decisions taken at the India
Africa Forum Summit in April in which the PM of Ethiopia, and Minister
of Foreign Affairs, had participated.
H.E Mr. Anand Sharma also visited the Black Lion Hospital to view
the Tele Medicine Center in operation and attended a Continuing Medical
Education (CME) session between doctors at the Care Hospital in Hyderabad
and at the Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa.
Anand Sharma also had a meeting with the Chairperson of the African
Union Commission, Jean Ping at which the follow up of the decisions
of India Africa Forum Summit were discussed. The Executive Secretary
of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Abdoulie Janneh and the
Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Erastus J.O. Mwencha
also participated in the discussions, it was learnt. |
