By Our Staff Writer

ADDIS ABEBA(August 5, 2008) - Ethiopian "Literacy Plus" programme that targets rural women in an area highly affected by malaria was among the lists of Winners of the 2008 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes.

UNESCO announced that other winners of the year's prizes are from Brazil, South Africa and Zambia that offer inspiring examples of how literacy impacts powerfully on health.

Brazilian programme "Alphabetizando com saude" which demonstrates successful collaboration between municipal health and education organizations in the city of Curitiba; Operation Upgrade's "Kwanibela Project" in South Africa for offering an innovative approach to integrating HIV and AIDS information into literacy programmes; and the "Reflect and HIV" programme in Zambia organized by the People's Action Forum by for the remarkable local outreach they engaged in when developing cultural activities in mother tongue languages were included in the winners list.

An array of outstanding projects were submitted from around the world, based on this year's theme of "Literacy and Health", with a strong emphasis on epidemics and communicable diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and malaria, the UN agency said.

Two other projects received honorable mentions from the international jury: a literacy programme in Morocco for the visually impaired and a programme supported by the British Broadcasting Corporation that uses an entertainment-lens to teach reading and writing, such as through dramas and reality shows.

Accordingly, the winners will receive their awards during a ceremony celebrating the 2008 International Literacy Day, 8 September, at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.
