Ethiopian programme among
UNESCO Literacy Prizes winners |

ABEBA(August 5, 2008) - Ethiopian
"Literacy Plus" programme that targets rural women in an
area highly affected by malaria was among the lists of Winners of
the 2008 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes.
UNESCO announced that other winners of the year's prizes are from
Brazil, South Africa and Zambia that offer inspiring examples of how
literacy impacts powerfully on health.
Brazilian programme "Alphabetizando com saude" which demonstrates
successful collaboration between municipal health and education organizations
in the city of Curitiba; Operation Upgrade's "Kwanibela Project"
in South Africa for offering an innovative approach to integrating
HIV and AIDS information into literacy programmes; and the "Reflect
and HIV" programme in Zambia organized by the People's Action
Forum by for the remarkable local outreach they engaged in when developing
cultural activities in mother tongue languages were included in the
winners list.
An array of outstanding projects were submitted from around the world,
based on this year's theme of "Literacy and Health", with
a strong emphasis on epidemics and communicable diseases such as HIV,
tuberculosis and malaria, the UN agency said.
Two other projects received honorable mentions from the international
jury: a literacy programme in Morocco for the visually impaired and
a programme supported by the British Broadcasting Corporation that
uses an entertainment-lens to teach reading and writing, such as through
dramas and reality shows.
Accordingly, the winners will receive their awards during a ceremony
celebrating the 2008 International Literacy Day, 8 September, at UNESCO
Headquarters in Paris, France.
