Netherlands adds 5 mln euro to help drought victims

By Our Staff Writer

ADDIS ABEBA(August 5, 2008) - The Royal Netherlands Embassy here on Monday announced that the country is contributing an extra five million euro to help Ethiopians cope with the current drought.

Earlier this year the Netherlands already contributed 8.5 million euro to help drought victims. In total the Netherlands has contributed 13 million euro in for humanitarian relief, a statement from the embassy said.

The new five million euro contribution will go entirely to the Humanitarian Response Fund set up to efficiently provide support for humanitarian needs in Ethiopia, it said adding that the fund supports food aid, urgent health care and drinking water. It also supports urgent agricultural support.

The need for additional support remains large, as drought continues to affect the lives of more and more people, the statement cited the Netherlands' Minister for Development Cooperation, Bert Koenders, as having said. "In addition, higher oil and food prices on the world market have contributed to the higher cost of humanitarian support."

In addition to the above direct contribution for Ethiopia the Netherlands is also the largest contributor to the central emergency fund of the UN (CERF). This year already $27.8 million of the Netherlands contribution to this fund was used for Ethiopia, the embassy added.
