initiative here

ADDIS ABEBA(August 7,2008) - In July 2008, the General Directorate for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved 545,200.00 Euros contribution to sustain OCHA Humanitarian Response Fund, started in Ethiopia to answer basic needs of vulnerable communities affected by the drought, the embassy said in a statement.

This contribution falls within the bilateral emergency fund carried out by OCHA in the Country and stems from the reported worsening in the food emergency, it said.

According to the embassy, the programme in particular will provide financial support to people living in most disadvantaged areas, where gaps in the relief coverage have been assessed. Part of the fund will additionally contribute to implement harvest activities.

When possible, the UN Agency is expected to implement the initiative in close cooperation with Italian civil society organizations already operating in the areas addressed, the statement added.

The allocation follows a previous fund granted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to FAO, to support implementing the initiative 'Strengthening Pastoralist and Agro-Pastoralists' Livelihoods in Lowlands of Ethiopia', aimed to enhance agencies' coordination and minimize any possible gap in the on-going humanitarian relief programmes undertaken in the targeted areas
