Gov't offices join hands to work for respect of law in nation

By Rose Mestika

ADDIS ABABA(August 1,2008) - A joint-up forum of government Commissions, ministries and institutions engaged in the respect of law was established on Wednesday.

The newly established forum has 11 members who full filled the minimum requirement of being a partner with two of the three institutions namely, Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, Ethiopian Ombudsman institute and the Federal Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission, as set by the technical committee.

Thus, the legal and administrative affairs standing committee with the house of peoples' representatives, Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, Ethiopian Ombudsman institute, the Federal Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission, the Federal Police Commission, the Federal Supreme Court, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Capacity Building, the Federal Civil Service Agency, Ministry of Women's Affairs, and the Office of the Federal Auditor General are the members of the joint-up forum, officials from the technical committee said.

The aim of the new forum is to work together in respect of justice and law, to assure the good governance, to eliminate working for similar cases separately and solve redundancy, and capacity building of each institution's staffs for the achievement of their goal.

The technical committee opens up the membership access to include some other related institutions in the future however; it said it faced challenges from the participants. Participants were debated whether it has to be closed for other institution or not. The reason was that the forum will be immense and hard to achieve its goal easily and they also debate on the rules and regulations of the forum, said participants.

"The establishment of this forum will help to join forces to work towards the respect of law and good governance by eliminating redundant of activities, waste of time and resources", speaker of the House of People Representatives, Ambassador Teshome Toga said on the occasion.

The Ethiopian Ombudsman institute took the initiative and has been working on it for the last one year to the existence of the forum.

The forum will have a meeting twice a year and each institution will have an opportunity to organize the yearly summit, according to the officials.
