EEPCo, Indian companies sign $31 mln contract to electrify 382 rural towns here

ADDIS ABEBA(August 11,2008) - Two Indian companies, IRCON International Limited and National Contracting Company Limited (NCC), last week signed contracts with the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCO) amounting to USD 31 million to electrify rural towns and villages in Ethiopia.

With the purpose of extending the national grid in northern, north-western, southern, western and central part of Ethiopia, the project, financed by the World Bank was said to electrify the towns and villages by performing extension of 17 substations and construction of distribution lines, benefiting approximately one million inhabitants, according to statement from the Indian Embassy here.

Estimated to be completed in 18 months time, the contract project envisages complete design, supply, testing and commissioning of 17 substations.

The statement noted that in the last six months various Indian companies received Suppliers Credit amounting to USD 100 million through Indian commercial banks supported by the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India (ECGC) to execute various electricity projects in Ethiopia. Good Luck Steel Limited has got USD 8 million for the supply of transformers to EEPCO.

In addition, in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Regional State Hagere Mariyam a rural electrification project was successfully completed through the first Indian Line of Credit of USD 65 million, the statement reminded.

At the signing ceremony Meheret Debebe, General Manager of EEPCo appreciated Indian companies for their professional approach and expressed his desire to have more Indian companies working With EEPCo. Indian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Gurjit Singh, also congratulated and complimented the Indian companies on the occasion for their commitment and positive intent towards the project and wished them all success for completing it efficiently, it was learnt.
