Agency licenses projects worth 94 bln birr capital last budget year, attains
93% of plan

ADDIS ABEBA(August 21,2008) - The Ethiopian Investment Agency licensed 1,773 foreign and local investors with 94 billion birr capital in 2007/08 budget year, and has attained 93 percent of its strategic plan, said the Director General on Tuesday.

Abi Woldemeskel, Director General of the Agency, told journalists at his office that agriculture, floriculture, vegetable, agro-industry, textile, hide and skin, construction, health, education, hotel and tourism were the major areas which the investments focused on. During implementation they were set to create job opportunities for over 3,320,000 people.

In the past budget year the Agency targeted the promotion of attracting foreign investment mostly in textile, hide and skin products and agro industry from Turkey, India, China and Germany, he added.

The promotion works carried out by the Agency in collaboration with Ethiopian embassies in different countries and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are expected to attract more than 35 investors to come to Ethiopia the next budget year.

According to the director, the Agency implemented the Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) to improve client service, promotion of attracting foreign investors, and follow up the licensed ones to go on to next production phases.

In the past budget year 1,627 among licensed were foreign investors, the rest 87 were local.

The obtained result implies that from the past five years the flow of foreign investment has increased, it was learnt.
