ADDIS ABEBA(August 23 - 24,2008) - What a great finish!! Once again Tirunesh Dibaba stormed to victory to snatch gold in the women's 5,000 m race on Friday with the usual spectacular finish.

With this shinning victory Tirunesh is now in the history book as the first ever woman athlete in long distance to take two gold medals in one Olympic. The first gold was earned in 10,000m race with a new Olympic record for the event.

Tirunesh was comfortable with the race having such a wide gap at the end. One delighted athletics fan renamed her "Inkunesh", meaning "you are diamond," Indeed.

She is a diamond for Ethiopia and Africa.

When Tirunesh run a perfect race to finish at a time of 15 minutes 41:40 seconds, the second placed Ethiopia-born Elvan Abiy Legesse settled at 15:42:74. The third place was won by the Athens gold medalist Meseret Defar with a time of 15:44:12.

The win took the Ethiopian gold medal tally to three. With three gold medals, one silver and one bronze, Ethiopia now stands 22nd in the medal table.

China with (47) gold medals, U.S.A with (30), Britain (18), Russia (17), Germany (14), Australia (11), South Korea (11), Japan (9), Italy (7) and the Netherlands (6) occupy the top 10 spots in the medals table, in that order.

The Ethiopian athletics fans were gulled to their TV set for over 15 minutes to witness their wonder athlete deliver Olympic gold medals. The action was magnificent. All erupted with joy when they realized that Tirunesh was hitting the target.

That was a joyous moment for the country. Meseret who was expected to win for the second time failed to do so mainly because she was obstructed half way the race. That was why her tears trickled down when she took the third place podium.

Ethiopians celebrate the sweet victory gained by Tirunesh Dibaba.
