AU urges world to work with region
on Zimbabwe

Reuters

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt(July 1,2008) - The head of the African Union called on the international community on Monday to work with southern African countries to find a solution to Zimbabwe's crisis.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe was declared the winner on Sunday of a one-candidate election which had been widely criticised as violent and unfair. Zimbabwe is also suffering economic collapse.

"I'd like to ask the international community to work with the SADC (Southern African Development Community) region to find a solution to this problem," Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, the chairman of the African Union, told an AU summit in Egypt.

He did not articulate a clear position on the election itself.

"I'd like to congratulate the people of Zimbabwe for their success, but I'd also like to commiserate with them for their suffering," Kikwete said.
