UN top official to present at int'l meeting in Addis Ababa

By Our Staff Writer

ADDIS ABEBA(July 8,2008) - Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) Director Thandika Mkandawire is to present a paper on institutional Monocropping and Monotasking in Africa onn Wednesday this week in Addis Ababa, the UN agency's Ethiopia office said on Monday.

The Director's presentation forms part of Columbia University's initiative for policy Dialogue Africa Task Force Meeting, it said.

UNRSID said that during the meeting, scheduled to take place at the Ethiopian Development Research Institute-Dr. Mkandawir will discuss the current focus on institutions as a key to development in Africa.

“In his paper, Dr. Mkandawire argues that, while the upsurge of interest in institution is welcome, the single minded subjugation of institutional reform to one set of policies has denied local institutions the capacity for learning from the wide range of experience from other parts of the world,” UNRISD said in a press statement Monday.

"Institutions established in this mould are unlikely to be able to produce the locally engaged, flexible strategies to address the task of edifying stable, developmental, democratic and socially inclusive social orders that have thus far remained illusive in Africa," UNRSID said.
