Authority, local companies sign deal for road construction, design projects worth 1.4 bln birr

ADDIS ABEBA(July 9,2008) - The Addis Ababa City Roads Authority (ACRA) on Monday signed agreemnents with local contractors for the construction of six road and five designing package projects estimated to cost 1.4 billion Birr.

Signing the agreement with three indegenous companies namely, Medroc-Ethiopia Construction, Iniy Construction and Hazi-ii Construction, at the ACRA office. ACRA Director General, Engineer Fikade Haille, said the projects, when completed, will have greatest role in curbing the traffic jam in the city of Addis Ababa.

He said the total length of road to be built by the companies will be 31.66 Kilometer in length and 25-30 meter in width.

Engeener Fekade said he was pleased to sign the landmark agreement, as it was the first time that the government was giving projects of this nature to private local companies.

He said the three companies were found to be experienced and well organized with necessary human and material resources to handle the projects.

Under the agreement, Midroc has been awarded with the lion's share of the road construction project (18.2 kms) to stretch from City tip ring road square to Bisrate Gebrel and from Megenagna Ayat to the remaining on the left part, including from Gurd Shola to Sumit to Yeka Bole.

Iniy Construction will build Alembank-Yeshi Debele-Bole Ring Road square - Meskel square covers, covering 7.8 kilometer.

Hazi-ii will construct the road from Ayertena to Tatek Ambo road, covering 5.2 kilometer.

The authority has also signed with three other consulting Engineer companies-Unicon, Best, and Heck- for five package design projects in major city roads that will cover 92.92 kilometer.

All projects, including the design works are scheduled to be completed within 14 to 24 months.

But according to Engineer Fikade, previous experiences have indicated that the designing work would be completed before the dead line in the agreement.

Engineer Fekade also said the authority was currently striving to hasten border marking works as part of the road construction project.
