JICA,Oromia Bureau sign
agreement to launch health project |

ADDIS
ABEBA(July 10,2008) - Oromia
regional health bureau and Japan International Cooperation Agency
(JICA) on Tuesday signed an agreement to undertake a project for improving
maternal and child nutrition status in the region.
The project aims to enhance community participation on preventing
malnutrition among children and mothers, including strengthening health
extension worker's capacities for providing nutrition services to
communities.
It also aims to increase the linkage between communities and health
facilities, strengthening capacities of regional, zonal, and Woreda
health office to enhance nutrition services, and demonstrating effective
multi- sectoral collaboration models for nutrition activities
Speaking at the signing ceremony at the regional state's headquarters'
in Addis Ababa, Health Bureau chief Shallo Daba said Jica's material
and financial support, which he said was not the first, would help
the region achieve its targets on the health sector.
JICA's resident representative Katsuhiro Sasaki said on his part that
JICA's project was initiated to support the region's efforts to tackle
the problem of maternal and child nutrition-cross-cutting issues that
needed to be addressed to meet the UN-set Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs)
Arsi, Bale and East Shewa have been selected as the pilot areas of
the project considering their vulnerability for nutrition status.
The project is part of the JICA program with the government of Ethiopia
to improve the health sector in the country.
