By Rose Mestika

ADDIS ABEBA(July 10,2008) - Oromia regional health bureau and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on Tuesday signed an agreement to undertake a project for improving maternal and child nutrition status in the region.

The project aims to enhance community participation on preventing malnutrition among children and mothers, including strengthening health extension worker's capacities for providing nutrition services to communities.

It also aims to increase the linkage between communities and health facilities, strengthening capacities of regional, zonal, and Woreda health office to enhance nutrition services, and demonstrating effective multi- sectoral collaboration models for nutrition activities

Speaking at the signing ceremony at the regional state's headquarters' in Addis Ababa, Health Bureau chief Shallo Daba said Jica's material and financial support, which he said was not the first, would help the region achieve its targets on the health sector.

JICA's resident representative Katsuhiro Sasaki said on his part that JICA's project was initiated to support the region's efforts to tackle the problem of maternal and child nutrition-cross-cutting issues that needed to be addressed to meet the UN-set Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

Arsi, Bale and East Shewa have been selected as the pilot areas of the project considering their vulnerability for nutrition status.

The project is part of the JICA program with the government of Ethiopia to improve the health sector in the country.
