DKT Ethiopia launches new contraceptives

ADDIS ABABA(July 11,2008) - DKT Ethiopia launched on Wednesday three new types of contraceptive pills it said have higher advantage for women and less side effects.

One of the products, Emergency contraceptive pills, is said effective prevention means of unwanted pregnancy as it is useable by women following unprotected intercourse or if faced with accidents such as breakage of condom.

The second one, Hyan, is best for lactating mothers and women over 40 years of age.

The third one and most popular is Trigestrel that is useful for contraceptive as well as regularizing the menstrual cycle.

"These products will give better choices for the client," DKT Ethiopia Director Andrew Piller announced on the launching ceremony of the contraceptives at the Gandhi Hospital.

The Director also stated that all the three products were safe and effective ways of preventing unwanted pregnancies.

DKT Ethiopia launched a nationwide campaign to allow ease of access to emergency contraceptive pills and also provided training and the mechanisms to do so.

Before the introduction of these pills, DKT conducted a training program for physicians in Addis Ababa, Jimma, Bahir Dar, Arba Minch, Awassa, and Dire Dawa.

We have a plan to give second round training in different regions related with the launching of the new product, said Haymanot Asseffa, Technical Manger of DKT on the occasion.

Haymanot conferred that the products were affordable for the community.

These new contraceptive pills are already available in all pharmaceutical stores, according to information from the DKT.

Despite a huge increase in contraception globally, 51 million unintended pregnancies in developing countries occur every year to women not using contraception, a new
World Bank report said on Thursday on the eve of World Population Day.

It said another 25 million pregnancies occur because women's contraception fails or they use a contraceptive incorrectly.
