“pastoralist lessons bazaar”

By Rose Mestika

ADDIS ABEBA(July 16,2008) - A two-day lessons bazaar and workshop intended to create the venue for pastoralists to share experience and identify problems in implementing projects in pastoralist areas was held on Tuesday at the Global Hotel.

The workshop organized by CARE-Ethiopia also sought to inform programming and to influence policy.

It was sponsored by CARE-Ethiopia, Pastoral Program Coordination Unit under the USAID funded PLI project, which has been implementing programs in the Oromia, Afar, and Somalia regional state with the objective of supporting pastoralists to improve household livelihood security and maintain assets during drought cycles.

Pastoralist representatives of Somali, Borena, and Afar and other partner organization are taking part on the two days lesson bazaar and panel discussion.

According to CARE Ethiopia, the out come of the two-day event will contribute much in supporting ongoing efforts, strengthening good governance and policy implementation in pastoral areas as well as in facilitating learning among different consortium member organizations to bring the desired impact and commitment at all levels.

The PLI project is being implemented since September 2005 in the most drought affected pastoralist areas.

It is designed and implemented in partnership with the Government, NGO consortia and communities working at field level, according to available information.
