Italy supports FAO initiative in lowlands of Ethiopia

ADDIS ABEBA(July 23,2008) - The Government of Italy has approved a sum of 500,000 Euros in development cooperation to support FAO- Food and Agriculture Organization, to support the implementation of the project in low land of Ethiopia.

The contribution to the project: 'Strengthening Pastoralist and Agro-Pastoralists' Livelihoods in lowlands of Ethiopia' falls within the bilateral emergency fund carried out by the FAO in the country, according to a statement from the Italian Embassy in Addis Ababa.

The embassy said the initiative mainly aims to enhance coordination among all the involved bodies and institutions, in order to minimize any possible gap in the on-going humanitarian programmes.

It said the initiative will also promote further better use of all available resources to face people's basic needs.

Moreover, the project intends to promote planning systems in the water resources and pastoralist sectors, as well as to start a veterinary assistance network in the areas of Gambella and Oromyia, the statement said.

It said envisaged activities include capacity building for local agriculture institutions, collection of information in the agricultural sector, as well as drafting and implementation of emergency projects in the pastoralist and agriculture.

Furthermore, veterinaries will be provided with technical support of pharmaceutical supplies.

The UN agency will implement the initiative in close cooperation with civil society organization already operating in the area addressed, if and when situations allow to do so, according to the statement.
